Your Role
As Senior Practitioner (Room Leader), you will:

If necessary, the opening and closing of the nursery could be asked of a senior where the manager and deputy are not available.

Seniors are room leaders and are responsible for the overall running of their assigned room in the nursery.

Supports, supervises and motivates staff in their room, shares professional knowledge to improve practice and makes sure all regulatory requirements are followed within the setting.

As senior practitioners within their early years setting, Room Leaders should not only build positive relationships with staff, but also with the children and their parents and carers. This allows for open communication and a good parent/carer partnership, ensuring everything flows smoothly and to a high standard.

Good level of knowledge of all health and safety policies and procedures that are relevant in early years settings. This includes safeguarding, emergency and security procedures.

Supporting and supervising the needs of the early years staff members and possible apprentices/students. Room Leaders have the job of assigning specific tasks and providing advice, so the best childcare possible is delivered.

As a Room Leader, it is very important the environment they create meets all standards and guidelines of the EYFS, including the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning (CoETL) and the children’s individual needs and interests.

Room Leaders need to be able to think ahead and adjust care and resources to meet EYFS guidelines, as aspects can change. Room Leaders will often discuss with the management team long-term planning ideas or any major changes in practices.
